I don't know if this book was made specifically for the show, but there is (or was last month) a show of the Berenstain's original art at the Strong Museum in Rochester, NY (I happened upon it when I took my kids there, during a rainy day on our vacation)--and it is gorgeous! I had never paid any attention to the Bears books before, and that material was not that interesting--but the cartoons and the magazine covers were a revelation.

Craig, at the risk of kneejerk negativity, I'll say that your review of "Child's Play" confirms what I have long suspected: that the Berenstains were talented craftspeople who found their way into a snug, comfortable, enervating formula that had the effect of robbing their work of whatever oomph and joy it originally had.

All the Berenstain Bears books I've read have been insultingly pat and simple-minded, stereotypic, and flat. And I think you're right to suggest that this flatness manifests itself on the level of drawing as well as writing: the juice in their drawing seems to dry up.

Er, in case you can't tell, I too really dislike those books.

That said, I appreciate your review, and I'm glad to see it here. I myself wouldn't have been able to write fairly about "Child's Play," I bet, because my years of trying to steer Children's Lit students away from (or at least beyond) the Bears would have gotten in my way. Thanks for bringing something unexpected to the table!
