Ah, Craig, a lovely, unexpected, thought-provoking review. I like the way you draw connections between the history of comics per se (as we fans understand them) and the larger history of publishing that may be much more relevant to comics than we usually think. Yes, I think you're on to something.

And such imagery! Reminds me of just how much cartooning history is wrapped up in religious and sectarian and political controversy, even violence (something David Kunzle's first volume on the History of the Comic Strip shows).

You're right: those scatological satirical images are worthy of a Crumb or a Ron Cobb. "Underground" indeed!
